Abstract

FDG-PET is a unique technique for quantitative imaging of regional cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (rCMRglc) in living brain. However, 18F-FDG was taken up into not only normal tissues but also inflammatory regions with microglial activation which humper the accurate diagnoses of brain diseases. To solve this problem, we recently succeeded to develop 18F-BCPP-EF, a novel PET probe for mitochondrial complex 1 (MC-1) [1], and several preclinical researches with 18F-BCPP-EF were conducted using an animal PET scanner to assess the changes in MC-I activity in the aging process [2], ischemic [3], Alzheimer disease [4], and Parkinson disease models [5,6] of monkeys. In addition, we have started the clinical PET researches in corroboration with several academic and industrial groups. These results strongly suggested that MC-I imaging using 18F-BCPP-EF could be a useful imaging index superior to 18F-FDG.
